Back with a Bang! Winners of the Pro Jury Award for Best Animation at the Kids for Kid Festival, BFI London

How can we be so lucky to win another award for our film-making skills...?

Talent of course, from our wonderful practitioners aiding our creative ideas, Fabric Lenny and the Big Voice Media Collective. Genius ideas from our youngsters developing further their notion of film content, story line, music and character development. All wrapped up with additional funding for experimentation with tablet based film-making via IntoFilm the nations new Film Education Development Agency. We are blessed here at Battyeford to have had such accolades and know that once again our new film will be screened across the world at various children's film festivals in the next year to come. It is all so aspirational!

What happened on our award winning day? November the 15th saw lots of the child filmmakers set off from Mirfield on the train to London with parents for a fun filled day out in the 'smoke'. We attended the event hosted by the BFI cinema on Londons Southbank (WOW) and even got to ride on the London Eye! When it was announced that our new film 'Copperbead and the Legend of Pie' had won the Animation category there were squeals of delight to be heard from every corner of the cinema (and that was just the parents)!

What an Amazing Day of Clay!

Our pupils from Year 5 & 6 did Battyeford proud when we recently visited James Oughtibridge's studio and workplace (Sculpture Lounge, Holmfirth). The work they produced was truly fabulous!

As part of a homework task, pupils were asked to design vessel shapes that were inspired by a series of Hockney abstract seascape images from the 80's. They provided a stimulus for 3D shape and external mark making/detail. 

On arrival to the studio complex in Holmfirth (well worth a visit...) James took us on a tour of the venue to see the work of the many other sculptors working from this base. This was fascinating for the pupils to see functioning busy studios with an array of materials and processes. What an amazing insight in to the work of a sole trader in the creative industries for pupils at this age. Working here at the venue really meant something to our pupils "The tour was my favourite part it was surprising, I liked that" - Callum 

We were guided through the process of vessel making by James who took us step by step through the making leading to success for all.   

The resultant work is stunning!

Building the first layer of slabs up from a base... 

Adding detail with strips of clay and textures using a variety of tools... 

Painting a layer of glaze on to the unfired ceramic vessel... 

All together at the end of a long day ... happy!

Below are a few examples of the fired artworks...we have had tremendous feedback nationally via the NSEAD online Facebook community of Art Teachers. One of whom stated that this work had put her Year 10's to shame! Lot's of teachers from all over the country have commented that this work is truly stunning!

Julia Ogden Inspired - Birds in the Trees...

Julia Ogden, an illustrator from Brighouse, has inspired our youngsters in a fabulous after school club for Years 4-6...

Here are the parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters coming to take a look at the finished works on the last night of the project! Some had to dash back to the car to reach for phones and cameras as they couldn't believe how wonderful the artworks were...Thanks everyone for the lovely feedback! 

Mrs Pyatt (our Headteacher) got in on the action by doing a proud tour of all the artwork. She is trying to steal some works now for her office wall! 

These artworks are so amazing we had to find an outlet to show them (and soon)...We approached the fabulous Brooks Deli www.brooksofmirfield.co.uk/ in Mirfield and the owners have kindly let us have a special show in their premesis. The special preview is Wednesday the 19th of March between 5.30-6.30pm.

A Fabulous Journey in 

Mark Making...

Year 6 have been working hard at their mark making during the Spring Term. They have created a set of awesome small canvases, created with a myriad of marks using non standard mark makers. Cocktail sticks, cotton wool buds, lollipop sticks and many more small instruments were used to form their imagery. Taking initial inspiration from the Nigerian artist Prince Twins Seven Seven they have now begun to work on large scale drawings with imagined pattern. Much joy was had today when we undertook some exploratory mark making to African Music...
